Mimi Cabell’s Poetics

I work with language, video, photography, and sound; my main areas of research are identity and representation. I am currently studying the digital language arts in the Literary Arts Department at Brown University in Providence, RI, USA, after having previously studied photography at the undergraduate and graduate level. While photography remains a reference for me in my work, I have begun to work with other media. What interests me is photography as a point of view or perspective — what it reveals about the context in which it was made. This has led me first, to work with language, and, second, to undertake projects and research that interrogate the “culture of looking,” and its social, political, and cultural underpinnings.

My current work includes a sound installation, Maybe, that uses the synonyms of the word ‘maybe’ as source material and creates “noise” out of language, ultimately replicating the experience of paralysis and anxiety associated with indecision. I am also working on a “re-write” of Pauline Réage’s 1954 erotic novel Story of O. The novel follows the main character, O, as she willingly becomes a sexual slave. In the piece, also titled Story of O, I perform deliberate erasures on the text to provide an alternative narrative of agency, intimacy, and power.
