Kristen Gallagher is a poet, editor and professor living in Sunnyside, Queens. She was a founding member of the Writers House, earned a PhD from Buffalo Poetics in 2005, and has one book: We Are Here, 99 pages of writing and transcriptions of recorded speech that capture human interactions with maps, GPS-enabled devices, and other directional media. Surprise! It coheres!

I received my PhD from SUNY Buffalo Poetics, which, during my time there, the time of Creeley, Bernstein, and Howe, was imagined to be, and so in some ways became, among other things, a bastion of the Olsonian poetics of place.

Now, I’m not engaged in some Oedipal attack on the figures of my graduate education, but if you read my first book, We Are Here, one thing that is immediately apparent, I think, is an evacuation of place. You never know where you are. There are some proper names, but they could be anywhere. There are highway numbers, but they don’t tell you much. Its dislocated, directional language serves as an opposite, an inverse, the photographic negative to Olsonian poetics.

Then there’s this: “All language operates like directions for how to get from one place to another.”

This is a quote from Jacques Lacan, which came to me in a dream I had while reading Seminar II, about three months after We Are Here had been published. I searched everywhere trying to find this quote, but could not. I say the idea, for me, “comes from” Lacan, though through the dysfunctional circuit of my unconscious. But I also feel there’s something accurate about it. Could it be somehow accurate?

At the 8th Macy Conference in 1951, Claude Shannon presented an electro-mechanical «mouse» that could learn to find its way through a maze. The mouse would first explore the maze, and then, after one complete exploration, run through it perfectly. The mouse was a small vehicle with two motors enabling it to move in any of four directions (north, south, east, west). The motors were wired to a «sensing finger» and set of relays that allowed the mouse to «explore» the maze and to «remember» its path through it. From a starting point it would enter a section and then move forward. If it bumped into a wall, it would move back to the center and move forward in a second direction (counterclockwise by ninety degrees from the first) until it passed to another section. A set of relays would lock into memory each of the successful directions chosen.

It turns out it’s not the journey or the destination, it’s the directions. Algorithms are walks in the park. Humans operate largely with faulty and untested algorithms. Considering the ongoing discussions between our fathers the GPS device: “Mistakes in syntax engender only errors, they are only accidents. But mistakes in programming engender falsehood.” —Lacan, Seminar II (305)

Friedrich Kittler’s incorporation of Lacan into his media theory, has led him to conclude that tape recording gives us a new form of access to the interplay of Lacan’s “three orders:” the Real, the Symbolic and the Imaginary. The use of recording technology in We Are Here revealed to me how much time is spent discussing which way to walk, how to get somewhere, and if we’ve gone the right way, but that had not been the experience of being in places. The recordings I made leading to this project really subverted my sense of my lived experience.

You record yourself talking to a friend, just talking with no attention to the recording, assuming it’s doing its thing and you’ll listen back later. You listen back later. … You don’t recognize your voice, you talk more than you realized, you hadn’t noticed how many helicopters seem to have been hovering and passing—do we filter them out? It seems like maybe so to some degree. I’ve also found that certain high quality recording devices amplify everything; all sound is brought forward in a way that’s different from in a live event. Hearing is different. Listening to a recording from a live event of which one was part, then, puts one in a refractory position with regard to one’s own apprehension of supposed experience—that experience, as we experience it, might be filtered in numerous unheard ways.

Now, the experience of the recording may suggest we should say, oh, that’s really what we were doing—but who can say the recording is absolute? No, it’s not that. It’s about capturing something that seemed genuinely missed, previously unattended to, but most importantly framing the filtration and distortion that congeals into the subject. That’s the refractory aspect of the project. And it would be highly unlikely without recording technology, the way it opens, just for a second, onto what Kittler calls “the noise of the real.” Whether the fidelity of the recording or playback equipment can be questioned for their own filtration and distortion, the point is the disconcerting experience offered to the subject by an encounter with the difference between a world experienced and a world played back from high quality recording.
